How can I tell whether a data offer is good?

Evaluate the whole bargain: guaranteed payment, scope, exclusivity, permitted uses, liability, effort and timing. A headline number is insufficient.

The short answer

Evaluate the whole bargain: guaranteed payment, scope, exclusivity, permitted uses, liability, effort and timing. A headline number is insufficient.

Compare like for like

Seek a second proposal for the same scope where appropriate and permitted. Ask each provider to make conditions and deductions explicit.

Keep unknowns visible

Use the offer worksheet to list missing clauses and questions. It intentionally does not score a deal or invent a market price.

What to record before deciding

Keep the written scope, official provider source, unresolved questions and the person responsible for each check. Treat a marketing claim as a claim until it is reflected in the agreement. A directory entry does not approve the transaction or establish your rights to share the records.

Your next step

See where your company’s data could fit.

  • Begin with a company description, not an export
  • Review systems, retained history and exclusions
  • Compare the terms before sharing records
