Data licensing glossary

Plain-language definitions for discussing a company-data agreement. The actual contract controls.

Updated 19 October 2026 · Sources and methodology

License

Permission to use specified material under agreed conditions. It does not necessarily transfer ownership.

Assignment

A transfer of rights or assets, distinct from merely permitting a use.

Exclusivity

A restriction on granting overlapping rights to others, which should have a defined scope and duration.

Acceptance

The contractual milestone at which a delivered package satisfies agreed criteria. It may trigger payment.

Sublicensing

Permission for a licensee to grant use rights to another party; the agreement should state the limits.

Revenue share

A share of defined receipts. The base, deductions, reporting and payment schedule matter as much as the percentage.

De-identification

Measures that reduce identifying information. The appropriate method and residual risk depend on context.

Provenance

Information about where records came from, who created them and what permissions or restrictions apply.

Derivative data

Material created from source records. Its treatment should be specified rather than assumed.

RL environment

A system in which an agent takes actions and receives feedback. Building environments and purchasing arbitrary company archives are different activities.
